Even though it happens to everyone, it can be inconvenient and embarrassing when your toilet is clogged and you are unable to resolve it easily. Even if there is another toilet available in your home, being without one of them can be a challenge.

What Not to Do When Your Toilet Is Clogged

However, before you get carried away trying to unclog your toilet with questionable methods, take the time to learn what you should not do. Below, you will find examples of things you should not do when your toilet becomes clogged.

  • Do Not Flush a Second Time- When the toilet first becomes clogged, it is easy to act hastily and flush a second time to try to force the waste down. This is a poor idea because the bowl will fill with more water and may overflow in the process. If you do not want to deal with a bigger problem, avoid flushing multiple times.
  • Do Not Leave It Clogged Overnight- Sometimes a clogged toilet will correct itself in a couple of hours, but that does not mean it is okay to leave it clogged overnight. A clogged toilet may have waste that is not biodegradable, which means leaving the problem unattended for several hours can exacerbate the plumbing issue and cause damage.
  • Do Not Use Baking Soda or Vinegar- While some people recommend using baking soda or vinegar to unclog a toilet, you should avoid these and other DIY methods. Such substances are abrasive and can do more harm to your plumbing system than good. You should only use a plunger when your toilet is clogged. If that doesn’t work, call us for assistance.
